Yama no Oto Taiko Ensemble is a group of musicians who are passionate about performing Japanese taiko drumming. Combining power and grace, taiko is a popular performing art that has roots dating back over two thousands years. Yama no Oto focuses on fresh repertoire that combines traditional taiko with more contemporary works, all with exciting energy, movement and choreography. Classes and Workshops are offered throughout the year at the Conservatory at Mount Royal University.
Paula is the current Artistic Director of Midnight Taiko Kai, in Calgary, Alberta since 2017. Paula is passionate about taiko as an art, and loves to perform and teach. With a background in classical ballet training, Paula loves to incorporate flowing arm movement and a dance-like quality to her taiko performance, and loves the freedom of expression and the whole-body experience of taiko. She travels to further her taiko experiences with other well-respected taiko instructors such as Art Lee (Tokara), Chieko Kojima (Kodo), Yuta Kato and Kris Bergstrom (Los Angeles Taiko Institute), and members of TaikoProject. Paula also teaches for Midnight Taiko Kai, and also at the Conservatory at Mount Royal University.
